From the Mothers of Invention’s 1966 debut, Freak Out!(opens in new tab), to landmark titles like Hot Rats(opens in new tab), Apostrophe (’)(opens in new tab) and Zappa’s best seller, Sheik Yerbouti(opens in new tab), he would create a progressive musical universe where every style – from rock to reggae, from surf-rock to Schoenbergian serialism, from free jazz to musique concrète – was up for grabs.
