Zurich University of the Arts Appoints New Viola Professor

Finnish violist Lilli Maijala is also head of viola at the Sibelius Academy and will begin her new role as of Fall 2023

Lilli Maijala will join Nicolas Corti, Wendy Enderle-Champney, Diemut Poppen, Lawrence Power, and Michel Rouilly, on the viola faculty of Switzerland’s Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

Alongside this appointment, Maijala is also a professor at the Sibelius Academy, where she has taught since 2009 and became the head of its viola department in 2011.

Maijala made her solo debut with Finland’s Oulu Symphony Orchestra aged 17. She studied with Teemu Kupiainen, Diemut Poppen, and Lars Anders Tomter at the Sibelius Academy, the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, and the Edsberg Chamber Music Institute.

Regularly in demand as a soloist and chamber music partner, she has appeared with the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Camerata Salzburg, Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen, and Tapiola Sinfonietta.

Alongside Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Pekka Kuusisto, and Pieter Wispelwey, Maijala is also a member of the innovative and experimental Valo Quartet.

“We are delighted to welcome Lilli Maijala to the ZHdK viola team from the autumn semester 2023,” wrote ZHdK.
